❓ What is an NFA item?

NFA stands for the National Firearms Act. NFA items include:

  • Suppressors (aka silencers)
  • Short-Barreled Rifles (SBRs)
  • Short-Barreled Shotguns (SBS)
  • Machine Guns
  • Destructive Devices
  • AOWs (Any Other Weapons)

These items require a special background check and registration with the ATF.

❓ Are suppressors legal in Texas?

Yes! Suppressors are legal in Texas and can be owned by individuals, trusts, or legal entities — as long as they’re properly registered with the ATF through a Form 4.

❓ Do I need a special license to own one?

No. You do not need a special license — just an approved Form 4, background check, and $200 tax stamp from the ATF.

❓ What’s a tax stamp?

A tax stamp is a one-time $200 payment to the ATF for each NFA item (Form 4). This has been required since 1934 and applies per item.

❓ How long does it take to get approved?

❓ What is an NFA Trust?

An NFA trust allows you to legally own NFA items as a trust (instead of as an individual). You can:

❓ Do I need to notify the local police?

Yes — part of the process includes a CLEO notification (Chief Law Enforcement Officer). It’s not permission — just a notice. We’ll generate that form for you.

❓ Can I legally transport my NFA item?

Suppressors and SBRs can be legally transported in Texas. If you cross state lines, you may need to file a Form 20 depending on the item. Ask us before traveling.

❓ Do you help with the paperwork?

Yes! We:

  • Take fingerprints in-house
  • Capture your photo
  • Help file the eForm 4
  • Provide CLEO notice and trust setup if needed
